Dr. David Thomas is the founding physician of Alamo City Bariatrics and also serves as medical director of bariatric surgery at Northeast Baptist Hospital and a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is a board-certified general surgeon whose passion for bariatric surgery was ignited during his service as a staff surgeon in the United States Air Force.

Dr. Guillermo Medrano del Rosal joined Alamo City Bariatrics in 2022. Dr. Medrano del Rosal is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery, lap band removal, bariatric revision surgery, vertical sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-y gastric bypass. He takes special interest in bariatric (weight loss surgery) and robotic surgery especially in very obese patients and those with diabetes.

Alamo City Bariatrics commitment to weight loss surgery is fueled by the positive impact it has on individuals. Our doctors have witnessed remarkable outcomes, including diabetes cured, high blood pressure resolved and obstructive sleep apnea eliminated. Patients who once struggled to walk down the block now run half-marathons. Parents and grandparents who could not engage in physical activities with their children and grandchildren, are now able to walk, run and play with their families. If you are considering a weight loss program to improve your health and lifestyle, Dr. Thomas and Dr. Medrano del Rosal encourage you to not wait and to call Alamo City Bariatrics to schedule a consultation.

Bariatric Surgeries

Bariatric surgical procedures cause weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing malabsorption of nutrients, or by a combination of both gastric restriction and malabsorption. Bariatric procedures also often cause hormonal changes. Most weight loss surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic surgery). The most common bariatric surgery procedures are gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Each surgery has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Types of Weight Loss Surgeries

Why Weight Loss Surgery?

If you’re overweight and have struggled to lose weight and keep it off, there are many reasons to consider weight loss surgery.

Perhaps diabetes is something people in your family have learned to accept. Now is the time to fight against common health conditions like diabetes, heart disease and joint disease. Now is the time to gain confidence in yourself and solve some of your health problems, as well as head off some you may not have yet.

Carrying excess weight puts you at risk for numerous health problems. They may not show up for several years, but eventually extra weight may cause:

  • Arthritis
  • Breathing problems
  • Chronic headaches
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Infertility
  • Reflux
  • Sleep apnea

Is Surgery Right for Me?

You may want to consider surgery if:
  • You are 80 to 100 pounds overweight or have a BMI* of 40 or higher.
  • You have a BMI of 35 or higher AND weight-related conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, joint disease or sleep apnea.
  • You understand and accept your eating habits must change after surgery.
  • You want to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

What is BMI*?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is a tool to measure mass based on your weight in relation to your height. Your BMI can help gauge your risk of certain diseases that can occur in people who have a higher percentage of body mass. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk may be. A BMI of 40 is about 80 to 100 pounds over “normal” weight.
