Dr. David Thomas is the founding physician of Alamo City Bariatrics and also serves as medical director of bariatric surgery at Northeast Baptist Hospital and a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is a board-certified general surgeon whose passion for bariatric surgery was ignited during his service as a staff surgeon in the United States Air Force.

Dr. Thomas’ commitment to weight loss surgery is fueled by the positive impact it has on individuals. He has witnessed remarkable outcomes, including diabetes cured, high blood pressure resolved and obstructive sleep apnea eliminated. David Thomas, MD

Dr. David Thomas, a native Texan, attended undergraduate school at the University of Texas at San Antonio and went on to earn his MD degree from Texas Tech-School of Medicine. After completing his residency in general surgery at Keesler Medical Center in Mississippi, he became a staff surgeon for the US Air Force. His professional affiliations are with the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, and Air Force Clinical Surgeons. Dr. Thomas enjoys being a bariatric surgeon because he has the ability to change people's lives in a dramatic and meaningful way.

His commitment is evident not only in the attention he gives his patients, but to his family as well. Dr. Thomas enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, especially when it involves his favorite hobby: fishing off the coast of Texas.

Bariatric Surgeries

Bariatric surgical procedures cause weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing malabsorption of nutrients, or by a combination of both gastric restriction and malabsorption. Bariatric procedures also often cause hormonal changes. Most weight loss surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic surgery). The most common bariatric surgery procedures are gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Each surgery has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Why Weight Loss Surgery?

If you’re overweight and have struggled to lose weight and keep it off, there are many reasons to consider weight loss surgery.

What is BMI*?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is a tool to measure mass based on your weight in relation to your height. Your BMI can help gauge your risk of certain diseases that can occur in people who have a higher percentage of body mass. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk may be. A BMI of 40 is about 80 to 100 pounds over “normal” weight.

**Weight loss surgery may be an option for adults with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious health problems related to obesity. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding may be an option for people with a BMI of 30 or more who have at least one serious obesity-related health problem.
