She established the Heart Failure Clinic of San Antonio with Baptist Medical Network to provide our community care for patients at any stage of heart failure. From prescribing the best medications and recommending therapies for heart failure symptoms to educating patients and their loved ones, we incorporate the patient's values and preferences for shared decision-making regarding treatment options. We also collaborate with the patient's other healthcare providers to ensure clear communication and coordination of care.

Sonja D. Brune, MSN, APRN, CCNS, CHFN, AACC, FHFSA, HF-Cert

Sonja D. Brune, MSN, APRN, CCNS, CHFN, AACC, FHFSA, HF-Cert is here to help manage all stages of heart failure by providing care to those in San Antonio and the surrounding communities. After working as a critical care and cardiology nurse, she graduated from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1999 with a Master of Science in Acute and Critical-Care Nursing and began working as an advanced practice provider caring for heart failure patients across the continuum of their disease utilizing evidence-based medicine.

Throughout her career, she has remained active in national associations in her field and has participated in steering committees, work groups, and expert panels. She co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and has served a sub-investigator in cardiac research studies. In addition to board certification as an Acute-Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist and Heart Failure Nurse, she has successfully passed additional board certifications and achieved advanced designations which reflect her commitment to providing the highest level of care to her patients.

What is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse?

An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) attends additional college courses with advanced education and must successfully obtain national certification that permits him/her to provide health care beyond the scope of a registered nurse. After performing thorough physical examination with review of your history and medications, the APRN can make recommendations, order any additional testing that is necessary, and prescribe appropriate medications.

What to Expect at Your Visit

We ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete any necessary paperwork and have vital signs and a heart tracing performed. If you are able, we will have you perform a simple hallway walk test during the initial visit. The initial visit may last an hour or more as we discuss your heart condition in detail as well as any concerns or goals you may have. We will also review each medication you take and consider the need to adjust dosages of any that are necessary to improve symptoms and survival. Subsequent visits will involve your response to medication changes and review results of any testing that has been ordered. We encourage you to come prepared with a list of questions / concerns and always bring in you medication bottles for the most accurate review of prescriptions.
