Every journey through pregnancy and childbirth is unique and deserves the utmost medical care and support. At Baptist Medical Network, we’re delighted to offer warm and compassionate midwifery services in San Antonio, TX. Our midwives work alongside our team of obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) to ensure you receive comprehensive care that suits your needs.

What Is a Midwife?

A midwife works in partnership with women to give the necessary care, advice and support during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period. Midwives adhere to certification requirements set by the North American Registry (NARM) or American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). The types of midwives include:

  • Certified nurse midwives (CNMs) - licensed as nurse practitioners (NPs) or advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). A certified nurse midwife can practice in any state in the U.S. and prescribe contraception.
  • Direct-entry midwives (DEMs) - anyone who becomes a midwife without becoming a nurse first. DEMs include certified professional midwives (CPMs), licensed midwives (LMs) or registered midwives (RMs), depending on the state where they are certified in. While CPMs have a national certification, there are some states where CPMs cannot legally practice.

You may opt for midwife services if you have a low-risk pregnancy and want a more personalized relationship with your provider. However, a close collaboration between your OB/GYN and midwife is recommended if you have a health condition that could affect your pregnancy or delivery, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy with multiple babies
  • High blood pressure
  • History of seizures
  • Previous high-risk pregnancies

What Does a Midwife Do?

Aside from assisting in childbirth, a midwife can provide the following:

  • Care for a newborn baby
  • Preventive measures for safe pregnancy and childbirth
  • Assistance for mothers to access medical care
  • Health counseling and education about childcare, preparation for parenthood and reproductive and sexual health

What Is the Difference Between a Midwife and OB/GYN?

OB/GYNs and midwives have different educational backgrounds and credentials. OB/GYNs are medical doctors specializing in women’s reproductive health, pregnancy care, delivering babies and cesarean sections. They completed a four-year medical school, four-year residency and three-year fellowship. OB/GYNs can pursue the optional American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) certification after completing their residency and getting a license to practice. They are qualified to manage complex pregnancies and any complications that can arise during delivery. Women with known medical issues affecting pregnancy or delivery may benefit more from an OB/GYN.

On the other hand, midwives can also provide a broad range of services for women’s health, such as birth control, checkups and menopause care, but they’re widely known for their childbirth and postpartum care services. However, they cannot perform cesarean sections. They are ideal for low-risk pregnancies where the mother is in generally good health for pregnancy and delivery. Midwives may be more accessible outside hospital settings in cases of delivering babies, such as in homes, community clinics and birth centers.
